Now a days privacy is a major concern while being online. Millions of users data gets exposed every often. Everyone wants to protect their privacy. Most of the users are not very technical and are unable to password protect folders which ultimately leads them to privacy breach.
We also hear news often about celebrity pictures leaked online etc. All of this could have been avoided at first place if pictures were password protected in their devices. But they ignored it and didn’t take their privacy seriously. That’s why they faced serious consequences. Because attackers are hunting for any opportunity to gather user’s private information.
So We have to do maximum steps we can do to make sure our data is secure and protected. First I want to clear something that I’m not talking about simple scripts of file lockers. Because they can be bypassed by live CDs. I’ll elaborate this in detail later. I want to share some high tech encryption techniques which are easy to follow.
Never Use Simple Password Folder Lock Tools
First please avoid any software which password protect. Because they are dependent on windows. If any intruder gets access to your PC and has ability to USB boot then he can easily gets his hands on your files. Yes you heard it right.
Simply Live Linux USB can expose all of your files in plain format. So those cheap password tools are of no use. I’ll rather share some extra ordinary tips to make your folders protected.
What is the Solution?- Answer: Encryption
Yes. Hard Disk Level File encryption to password protect files will only work. Because encrypted files will not be exposed in Live USB Windows or Linux. They secret private key with which files are encrypted will be saved on your brain or any external USB.
There are couple of tools which are available which can encrypt your files easily. Basically what encryption does is scramble all files contents based on industry standard AES algorithm.
Personally I use Gnu Privacy Guard zip on Linux to encrypt and password protect folder. This basically encrypts all files in a folder. The output is an encrypted .gpg file which has all the scrambled content which cannot be decrypted without the password which you set during encryption.
With this method you can encrypt a single file as well. Windows Users can use the windows tools available on GnuPG.
After the encryption you can delete the plain files as well. Simply decrypt the encrypted gpg when you need to view contents on want to update it.
Some Useful Tips – Password Protect Folder on USB
Which ever content you copy paste via USB should be always protected by gpg encryption. I repeat this is very important!. Because if you don’t do this then any one can use simple data recovery tool to recover deleted data from formatted USB Drive.
So Whenever you want to share some private pictures with any one using USB then always first encrypt them with GPG and then paste the encrypted gpg output file to USB. Doing that will never leak your files actual information. Which will protect your privacy.
If this all seems hectic then there are couple of USB Drives which have hardware enabled password protection. They are little bit expensive but you can try them as well.
